There are several types of cracked teeth, each requiring different treatments:
- Craze Lines: These are tiny, superficial cracks in the enamel that usually do not require treatment unless for cosmetic reasons.
- Fractured Cusps: Cracks in the raised points on the top of your teeth. Crowns are typically recommended to restore teeth with fractured cusps.
- Cracked Tooth: This crack extends from the chewing surface towards the root, often damaging the pulp. Root canal treatment is commonly needed to save the tooth.
- Split Tooth: When a cracked tooth goes untreated, it can split into distinct segments. Depending on the damage, endodontic treatment or surgery might be necessary to save the tooth.
- Vertical Root Fracture: These cracks start at the root and extend towards the chewing surface. Often going undiagnosed due to a lack of symptoms, these fractures usually require tooth extraction, although endodontic surgery may save the tooth in some cases.
